Hvar - Croatia's answer to the French Riviera?
11 August 2008
The island of Hvar is being hailed as Croatia's answer to the French Riviera, according to the Independent.
"Hvar has come of age", noted the newspaper, following its inclusion as one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world in a list by Conde Nast Traveller.
The island's two main towns are Stari Grad and Hvar, which, although linked by a scenic bus route, are miles apart in style, said the Independent.
"Stari Grad is a blissful retreat where artists and artisans live side by side in little stone houses that line the twisting alleys," while Hvar has been developed into a bustling resort where, according to the newspaper, "at times it feels like every male Italian under 25 is in town".
With designer boutiques, galleries and restaurants, Hvar has everything holidaymakers need for a glamorous retreat, while they can take a trip up to the lavender fields in the hills or a yacht excursion to nearby islands should they fancy a break from the hip town.
The Hvar summer festival takes place from June until October and features classical and jazz concerts, theatrical plays and art exhibitions.
