Illness rules Croat out of US Open

Croatian tennis star Mario Ancic will not take part in this year's US Open after pulling out with illness.

It is the second year the 24-year-old will miss out on the final grand slam of the year, having skipped the 2007 tournament because of a shoulder injury.

Ranked 25th in the world, Ancic's reason for non-participation on this occasion is a reoccurrence of mononucleosis, also known as mono and glandular fever.

Ancic did not play for much of the 2007 season because of the condition and has not been in competitive action this year since losing in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto to Frank Dancevic last month.

Fernando Verdasco recently won the Croatian Open, held at Umag in Istria.

The Independent recently described the Istrian region as "glorious", recommending features such as unspoilt coastlines and mountains and the close proximity of Venice for day trips, while Travel Weekly praised it for its "pretty landscape".
