Investigate truffles in Motovun
06 December 2007
The medieval town of Motovun, in northern Istria, is now host to a fascinating exhibition on the appreciation and cultivation of truffles.
This region above the Mirna River valley is known as a "truffle kingdom" and many of the mysterious subterranean fungi can be found here.
Permanent exhibition pieces include a reprint edition of the oldest preserved book on truffles written in 1564 in Italy.
The season for Istrian white truffles runs from September to December and these are said to be as good as the finest Italian or French truffles.
Specimens of this gastronomic delicacy and reputed aphrodisiac will be available, including both white and preserved truffles.
Staying at accommodation in Istria will allow people on holiday in Croatia to experience the delights of the hilltop town of Motovun, with its 13th century Romanesque-Gothic bell tower.
Don't miss Oprtalj and Livade, two other beautiful towns very close to Motovun, which are also famous for their truffles.
