Irish rejection of EU treaty 'cannot slowdown Croatian accession'
16 June 2008
The Croatian foreign affairs and European integration minister has argued that Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon Treaty will not affect Croatia's accession to the European Union.
Speaking after a referendum in Ireland saw a majority reject the Lisbon Treaty, Gordon Jandrokovic stated that the EU would "find an accession model for Croatia", reports the Javno website.
According to the website, the minister explained: "We respect the decision of Irish voters, of course we feel bad because of it, but nothing will slow down Croatian path to the EU.
Mr Jandrokovic made his comments at a seminar organised by both the British Embassy and the Croatian foreign affairs ministry in Opatija.
The EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn also said today that the process for Croatia's accession to the union was set to continue.
Speaking to Reuters, he said "concrete proof" would be provided on Tuesday that the programme is "moving ahead" for countries looking to join the EU, such as Croatia and Turkey.
