Istria continues development as 'Croatian Tuscany'
07 March 2008
Istria is rising to prominence as one of Croatia's key property hotspots, it has emerged.
A boom in the popularity of Croatian villas and apartments among holidaymakers and ex-pats alike is driving the growth, according to experts on eastern Europe.
Economic authority Finance Daily singled out areas including Porec, Rovinj and Pula as particular favourites among overseas visitors and investors, while the regions of Kvarner Riviera and northern Dalmatia are "ones to watch".
Pointing out that Istria is often referred to as 'the Croatian Tuscany', the publication went on to underline the country's proximity to the rest of Europe.
"Most of the inland areas experience short, cool summers and long, severe winters in contrast to the coast, which is more temperate," it stated.
"For a relatively small country, local terrain is quite diverse and includes flat plains along the Hungarian border, low mountains and highlands near the Adriatic coastline and islands," it continued.
Istria's so-called 'Old Town' Rovinj is known for its narrow lanes and brightly-painted houses, with the Rovinj Heritage Museum's extensive collection of artefacts testifying to the city's rich archaeological, artistic and maritime history.
