Korcula 'top historic destination'

Korcula in Croatia has been honoured as one of the top historic destinations in the world, according to the National Geographic Traveler.

The magazine ranks the top 109 destinations across the globe, placing the Croatian island in 22nd place.

Korcula came just after Sydney, Australia, in the list and beat destinations such as Munich in Germany, Antigua in Guatemala and Olympia in Greece.

The magazine describes the island as having a "picturesque medieval character" which has "endless stone fences, vineyards and olive orchards".

It adds that Korcula is "a charming Venetian-type town well-embedded into the Dalmatian coastal landscape".

The historical element of the island being Marco Polo's birthplace, is also commented on by the magazine.

Korcula gained a score of 74 points in the ranking, with the top location of Wachau/Melk Abbey in Austria achieving 88 points.

According to Korcula Info, the island has already been ranked in the Observer's top 20 paradise islands and its 20 dream holiday destinations.
