Lace festival opens in Croatia

The International Lepoglava Lace Festival in northern Croatia was opened yesterday, it has been revealed.

According to Javno.com, domestic guests and visitors from across Europe are expected at the event, which runs until Sunday (September 21st).

Lace in garments is the theme this year at the annual festival, while other features such as the Lace Collars exhibition also set to take place.

Marijan Skavaric, mayor of Lepoglava, told the news provider sales of items and "touristic value" should benefit the country's economy as a spin-off of the event.

He added: "This is why we have started the systematic teaching of the youth about lace-making. Opening a lace museum in Lepoglava is planned."

Meanwhile, the news provider revealed the nearby International Autumn Zagreb Fair was officially opened by Croatian agriculture minister Petar Cobankovic and Slovenian counterpart Milan Pogacnik this week.

President Stejepan Mesic was also on hand to help launch the event, which offers products from 600 communities across Croatia and beyond.
