Lithuania latest country to back Croatia's EU chances

Lithuania has become the latest country to support Croatia's bid for membership to NATO and the EU.

Gediminas Kirkilas, prime minister of Lithuania, said after talks with his Croatian counterpart Ivo Sanader that Lithuania fully supports Croatia's membership in the alliances.

Croatia is hoping to join NATO by mid-2009 and believes it will boost its chances of becoming a member of the EU in 2010. Lithuania became a member of the EU back in 2004.

With Croatia in the EU, it would make it all the easier for people to visit the country, and stay in one the Croatian villas found there.

On Tuesday it was revealed by Croatia that it had formally accepted NATO's invitation to start negotiations on its membership in the alliance.

Recently the Netherlands lent its support to Croatia's bid to become part of the EU, saying the country "belongs in Europe". However the country must meet certain conditions before it is accepted into the union.
