Ljubicic through as Croatia Open begins
16 July 2008
Home favourite Ivan Ljubicic needed just 52 minutes to dispose of Russian Mikhail Kuskushkin in the first round of the Croatia Open in Umag.
The fifth seed won 6-1, 6-2, his first victory in over a month following a disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon, tennis.com reports.
His run of form had seen the former world number three drop down the rankings but he will now be looking to win his first title of the season.
Countryman Ivo Karlovic will begin his challenge in the next round after receiving a bye along with the other top four seeds - Carlos Moya, Fernando Verdasco and Igor Andreev.
The tournament, in the north-west of Croatia, has been running since 1990 and become "one of the best and most admired ATP tennis tournaments in the world".
Slavko Rasberger, director of the Croatia Open, says it has helped Umag become "a symbol of high quality Croatian tourism" and claims it is the number one event in the country during the summer.
