Mesic joins presidents in launching Union for the Mediterranean

Croatia has joined with other countries from around Europe and North Africa to launch the new Union for the Mediterranean on Sunday, it has emerged.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to host a summit of 43 leaders, with Libyan leader Moamer Kahhafi the only invited guest to boycott the event so far, eubiness.com reports.
Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Monaco and Montenegro have all joined Croatia in signing up to the union, as have Turkey and African nations such as Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
The new group hopes to cement a partnership between Europe, north Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans.
According to the website, it upgrades the 1995 Barcelona process and will discuss six regional projects including building highways and sea routes, developing renewable energies and helping to foster business.
The Croatian president said he hopes the new union will help boost the regional economy and stability, balkaninsight.com reports.
In his speech to the summit, Stjepan Mesic said Croatia will invest efforts into actively building the region.
