Monopoly world record attempt takes place in Zagreb

Zagreb residents were on record-breaking form this week, helping set a new landmark for the number of simultaneous games of Monopoly, it has been revealed.

According to javno.com, there were around 80 participants in the capital city, as well as 120 more spread across Croatia in Osijek, Rijeka and Split.

One of 18 countries taking part, those in Zagreb were convinced they had contributed to breaking the record, with over 1,000 players predicted to have taken part worldwide.

The event, organised by Turbo Limac and Magma, drew a number of celebrities.

Local radio host Drele told the news provider before the event: "I haven't played Monopoly in ten years. I will stick to the rules."

According to Hasbro, other Monopoly world records include 1,680 hours for the longest game ever played, 286 hours for the longest game in a tree house and 99 hours for the longest game in a bathtub.

Croatian is one of 27 languages in which Monopoly is published, with the game licensed in more than 80 countries.
