NATO membership 'to boost economic growth'
07 July 2008
The Croatian deputy prime minister has suggested that joining NATO will help the country to further develop its economy.
Reuters reports that Damir Polancec said becoming a member of NATO could bring about several "positive economic effects" for Croatia.
According to the news provider, the country received an invitation to join NATO in April with a view to taking full membership in 2009.
Mr Polancec said investors will "feel more secure" once the country is a member.
"It is of particular importance as we want to attract more greenfield investors than was the case in the past, when we had very few," he commented.
Croatia also hopes to eventually join the European Union, Reuters notes.
Last month, the country's prime minister Ivo Sanader said there remains a "solution" for Croatia's entry into the union.
He made his comments after Irish voters rejected reform plans for the EU.
