Politicians meet as EU preparation continues

European employment commissioner Vladimir Spidla has met with Croatian deputy prime minister Damir Polanec as the country prepares for its accession to the European Union (EU).

The Joint Assessment of Employment Priorities (JAP), which analyses the main strengths and weaknesses of a country's labour market, was under discussion yesterday.

It is proposed the skills match between demand and supply in the Croatian workforce continues to be improved to meet EU standards.

Mr Spidla said the JAP is an important step for Croatia in its accession and remained positive about the process.

He continued: "Overall, Croatia has reached a good level of alignment with EU law on social policy and employment."

European commissioner for enlargement Oli Rehn predicted a bright future for the western Balkans this week.

He praised Croatia for implementing the stabilisation and association agreement and suggested an indicative timetable for conclusions of negotiations between the country and the EU could be presented next year.
