Quarter-final place for triumphant Croatia
13 June 2008
Croatia has qualified for the European Championship quarter-finals after a 2-1 win over Germany.
The triumph over one of the pre-tournament favourites in Austria and Switzerland was secured after goals from Darjo Srna in the first half and Ivica Olic after 62 minutes.
A late Lukas Podolski strike for Germany ensured a nervous finish for the Croats but was not enough to snatch victory from the Balkan side.
Luka Modric, the midfielder who will complete his transfer from Dinamo Zagreb to Tottenham Hotspur after the championship, said after the match the team was "overjoyed by the win".
"We wanted to exert pressure on our opponents so as not to allow them to develop their own game," he added.
"We also wanted to show that the criticism after the first match was uncalled for."
The euphoria of the Croatian players was matched in Zagreb, reports javno.com.
According to the news provider the city's Ban Jelacic Square went "mad with joy" following the 2-1 win in Klagenfurt.
