Record numbers enjoy Croatia's beauty
05 December 2007
This year is shaping up to be another record-breaker for Croatian tourism, exceeding all expectations and earning 7 billion in revenues.
Byron's "pearl of the Adriatic" attracted 9.2 million visitors in the nine months to the end of September, including 53.4 million overnight stays.
This is a six per cent increase and state research institute agency, the Tourism Institute, points to the country's "excellent geographical position" close to the major tourist markets of central Europe as a reason for this.
"It has a developed infrastructure which will improve further as more highways are constructed, while its amazing and numerous tourist attractions allow it to offer a rather colourful tourist product," spokesman Eduard Kusen told AFP.
Klaus Ehrlich, head of the European Federation of Farm and Village Tourism, noted that Croatia "is known as a fashionable destination in Europe at the moment which makes it easy to launch new projects and new products".
The dramatic coastline, dotted by more than 1,000 islands and islets, is a major drawcard but there are also many attractions inland.
The rustic vineyards of north-western peninsula can be explored from a villa in Istria and one of Europe's largest wetlands can be found at Kopacki Rit.
