Slovenia offers Italian-Austrian-Hungarian gastro experience
14 December 2007
If you prefer your holiday to revolve around the delights of the table, Slovenia offers a multitude of boutique food producers who are ready to ensure you experience the best the country has to offer.
Drawing on the culinary influences of neighbouring Italy, Austria and Hungary, Slovenian food features fantastic seafood near the coast and traditional feasts in the countryside.
The 'slow food' movement has gained popularity here and fresh fruit and vegetables, wild mushrooms, dairy products and fresh pasta are used in old-style recipes, cooked and eaten at a relaxed pace.
Viticulture is an ancient tradition in this country, dating back to Roman times. Slovenia boasts the oldest grapevine on the planet thought to be over 400 years old.
Around 38 different vine varieties, growing in 14 wine districts are ready to be explored.
By touring the alpine north and wine-growing regions along the Hungarian border, visitors can enjoy wine-tasting, bread-making and cooking classes.
Gastro-travel is the latest holiday trend according to restaurant consultants Joseph Baum & Michael Whiteman, reports 4hoteliers magazine.
